The key to the Adams 13 Metre design is that the displacement of a conventional 36 footer is drawnout into a longer, narrower and lighter boat. The result is a boat that is not only quite inexpensive to build but comfortable below.

The most important aspect from the cruising point of view, is the under water profile. Designed to suit trans-ocean sailing with centreboard and shoal draft fin keel combination because of its easy motion when running or reaching. While she will go to windward better than many keel boats, the Adams 13 Meter tracks fast and smoothly downwind with her centreboard raised. Since alot of the distance in long range cruising is done off the wind, the centreboarder/shoal keel makes a lot of sense.

The Adams 13 Metre could be called an energy efficient cruising design because she has been expressly designed for a couple to sail and see the world. For the cost and labour of a smaller boat the Adams 13 metre will, if anything, be easier to handle and you get there in quite a lot less time.

Interestingly, while she is a faster boat than many other yachts her size, her motion particularly to windward is very easy. In fact, in spite of her greyhound appearance, the Adams 13 Metre is probably going to take a lot less effort for a crew to cross the ocean than the average 36 footer.

The Adams 13 Metre is cutter rigged for ease of handling when long distance cruising. However it is mostly sailed as a sloop inshore as headsails are a modest size.

The accommodation layout provides for four to six people. The saloon is forward of the centreboard case and provides a cosy area removed from the working part of the accommodation. There are two large quarter berths aft which may be singles or doubles plus two saloon berths if required and two berths or a v berth forward of the saloon. A large toilet/shower compartment is enclosed alongside the centreboard case.
